The Mainstage and surrounding spaces get a new look

October 30, 2017

Who doesn’t love that excited feeling that comes from getting something new for the house? We’re feeling that way right now because the Mainstage side of The Mendel Center is receiving an updated look with the installation of new carpet. Areas included in the project are the Mainstage theatre and lobbies, stairways, and the second and third floor walkways.

Installation is taking place in various phases to work around activities already scheduled throughout the building.

“Events are often booked a year or more in advance, which can make renovation a challenge. Good teamwork between the carpet installation company, the Lake Michigan College facilities department, and The Mendel Center staff, along with a bit of logistical creativity, is making it possible to get the job done with little disruption to our clients and guests,” stated Mike Nadolski, executive director of The Mendel Center.

The first phase, which began in mid-October, is underway. Visitors will notice new flooring in the Mainstage lobby as well as the North Lower Lobby. Work will progress next to the South Lower Lobby and second and third floor walkways. The final step will be carpet installation on stairways and in the aisles of the Mainstage theatre.

The carpet being replaced served its purpose well, and then some. It was installed in 1992 when the Mainstage theatre first opened to the public.

“Twenty-five years is a long time for any carpet, but especially for one that has welcomed more than a half-million patrons, and has hosted thousands of food and beverage events,” Nadolski explained.

The poor condition of the carpet made continual maintenance necessary to patch and secure frayed edges of the rolled carpet originally installed. The new carpet comes in tiles that can be easily replaced if damaged or stained.

“Even with being just partially through the installation process, a fresh and modern feel is already noticeable. This is the latest part of our ongoing plan to upgrade the building in order to improve the overall guest experience,” Nadolski added.

Carpet installation will continue throughout the fall and winter with anticipated completion in February 2018.
