Lake Michigan College Chamber Ensemble Concert planned for April 21

The Lake Michigan College Visual & Performing Arts Department has an evening of instrumental and vocal chamber music punctuated with the beauty of dance planned during its Chamber Ensemble Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, April 21. The concert will be held in the LMC Mendel Center Hanson Theatre on the Benton Harbor Campus located at 2755 E. Napier Ave.

Groups performing are the LMC Instrumental Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Abigail Koo, the LMC Vocal Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Rebecca Derbas-Selvidge, and the LMC Dance Class under the instruction of Nancy Mattner.

Planned selections include “Gabriel Fauré” by Pavane; “Rhosymedre” by Ralph Vaughan Williams; “3 Romanzen, Op. 94 No. 1” by Robert Schumann, featuring oboe soloist Aurelia Davis; “Song Without Words, Op. 62 No. 1” by Felix Mendelssohn; "Spring Song," featuring oboe soloist Aurelia Davis; “Flute Sonata Undine, Op. 167 movements 1 and 3” by Carl Reinecke, featuring flute soloist Kiersten Colby; and “Waltz No. 2” by Dmitri Shostakovich, featuring tuba soloist Tim Dokter.

The LMC Vocal Chamber ensemble will join the Instrumental Ensemble for several songs including “Crucifixus” by Antonia Lotti, “Swingle Song” by Damon Meader, “My Funny Valentine” arr. Steve Zegree, and “Haven’t We Met” arr. Rosanna Eckert.

An added artistic dimension to the evening is provided by the LMC Dance Class which will perform a student-choreographed medley. The three musical selections include “Another Day of Sun” from “La La Land,” “River” by Bishop Briggs, and “Golden Hair” by JVKE.

About the Lake Michigan College Visual & Performing Arts Department
The Visual & Performing Arts department allows students to reach new levels of excellence through classroom instruction and public performance. The program is based in the Lake Michigan College Mendel Center, the only performing arts center of its kind in southwest Michigan. Here, LMC students have opportunities to study theatre, instrumental and vocal music, dance, drawing, painting, and more in a venue that attracts more than 100,000 patrons annually.

Auditions are held for select ensembles that perform on the same stages as world-renowned touring acts. Students in any major also have opportunities to audition for Broadway musicals and plays and join three different vocal ensembles, string and wind ensembles, a pop-rock ensemble, drumline, and jazz band. One of only two colleges in Michigan to carry the prestigious All-Steinway designation, LMC has a team of highly qualified professors that bring real-world expertise to the classroom.
